OUR TAKE / EDITORIAL OPINION
A plugin-friendly node needs an operating owner
Core Lightning suits teams that want a programmable node and can explain the dependencies around it.
Core Lightning documents CLI and JSON-RPC interfaces, plugins, and a requirement for access to a synchronized Bitcoin Core node. That is an attractive brief for an operator who wants to shape a Lightning installation deliberately. Our thesis is that extensibility should be treated as a responsibility to define boundaries. Every additional component should have a reason to be there and someone who understands what happens when it stops working.
We would evaluate Core Lightning for a technical team with a clear payment or channel-management requirement. The tradeoff is the freedom to assemble a tailored system against the work of maintaining that system over time. Our first design document would show the node, its Bitcoin dependency, and each proposed extension. We would remove anything that does not serve the initial use case.
Before selection, we would rehearse a restart, an unavailable dependency, and an extension failure in a test environment. We would also inspect access controls for the interfaces the application intends to use. Those are proposed checks, not claims about tested behavior. Core Lightning earns a place when programmability helps produce a system the operator can explain. Flexibility without that explanation would be a reason to simplify the design.

What is documented about AI?
Official material reviewed documents the product workflow, not AI features.
“No AI documented” means the checked sources do not establish an AI feature. It does not prove that the product uses no AI.
Pricing & access
The project code is permissively licensed; hosting, hardware, and channel costs are separate. The ccan modules have separate licenses.
Platforms: self-hosted, cli, api
